Desert Flower by Waris Dirie is an autobiography written about Dirie's experience living as a nomad in Somalia and her journey to becoming an international supermodel. The story follows her while she runs away from home and travels alone through the deserts of Somalia, working as a maid for her family in London, and being discovered and finding her way as a model. Throughout her journey, she faces many challenges. Time and time again, she finds people that she believes she can trust but after time, she is taken advantage of. Eventually she finds her way and becomes very successful. One of her main focuses and reasons for writing this book is to discuss one particular custom that her family practiced in Somalia. Female circumcision, which is also known as genetical mutilation, is a common custom that millions of Africans practice and Dirie speaks out against it in her book. In many ways, this book is a call to action, or at the very least, it brings awareness to a serious cause for people to understand that female circumcision exists today on a much greater scale than we all may think.
